The post-war boxer lineage later expanded into the R 80 G/S, helping define the large adventure motorcycle, while K-series fours and the S 1000 RR showed BMW repeatedly willing to break with its own traditions.

K 100
BMW mounted a liquid-cooled four-cylinder engine longitudinally on its side in the K 100, creating a completely different technical branch alongside the boxer twins.
2000s
R 1200 GS
The R 1200 GS developed the GS idea into a large-volume global adventure motorcycle, combining long-distance comfort, electronics and a distinctive boxer chassis.
