Porsche’s manufacturer story begins in 1948, but its engineering roots reach back to Ferdinand Porsche’s design office of 1931. Ferry Porsche then created the 356 because he could not find the sports car he wanted — and the company spent the next decades evolving that idea without being trapped by one layout.

Ferdinand and Ferry Porsche: engineering becomes a sports-car company

Treat the 911 as the spine of Porsche, then study every branch away from it. The deviations reveal how the company survived and grew.

Ferdinand Porsche founded his engineering office in Stuttgart in 1931 after a career designing vehicles and powertrains for other companies. The office created engineering work for outside clients before there was a Porsche-branded production car.

During the 1940s the company moved to Gmünd in Austria. Ferry Porsche, Ferdinand’s son, developed the sports car he felt was missing from the market. The 356 “No. 1” Roadster received its general operating permit on 8 June 1948 — the date Porsche treats as the birth of its sports-car brand.

Production later returned to Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen. The 911 arrived in the 1960s and became the enduring centre of the range, but Porsche repeatedly built important cars around other layouts. That ability to preserve a recognisable engineering philosophy while changing architecture is one of the company’s strongest museum themes.

Manufacturer history

The 911 is the centre of Porsche history, not the whole of it.

The Porsche museum story is one of continuity and branching: 356 to 911, rear engine alongside mid engine, front-engine transaxles, racing prototypes feeding road technology, SUVs broadening the company, and electrification changing the powertrain without ending the sports-car brief.

1931 · Before the badge

Ferdinand Porsche starts with engineering services.

Ferdinand Porsche founded his engineering office in Stuttgart in 1931. The company designed components and vehicles for outside clients long before a Porsche-branded production sports car existed. That engineering-services origin remains important to the way Porsche presents itself.

1948 · Ferry Porsche

The sports car Ferry Porsche could not find.

Ferry Porsche developed the 356 “No. 1” Roadster in Gmünd, Austria. It received its operating permit on 8 June 1948, the date Porsche treats as the birth of the sports-car brand. The idea was personal and practical: create the sports car he wanted to drive.

1963 onward · 911

Evolution becomes the design strategy.

The 911 retained a rear-engined flat-six layout and recognisable silhouette while evolving through eight generations. Porsche’s own history emphasises how the basic design identity survives fundamental changes in cooling, electronics, safety, aerodynamics and manufacturing.

1970s–2000s · Branches

Porsche repeatedly builds cars that are not 911s.

Front-engined transaxle cars, the 928, Boxster, Cayman and Cayenne all demonstrate that Porsche’s survival depended on expanding the product idea. The 911 remained central, but it was not enough to explain the whole company.

1980s–2026 · Technology cars

959, Carrera GT, 918 and Taycan turn new technology into identity.

The 959 made electronically controlled all-wheel drive part of the supercar story. Carrera GT used carbon structure and a motorsport-derived V10. The 918 made plug-in hybrid performance credible, while Taycan opened the battery-electric production era. Porsche’s technology flagships repeatedly become previews of what later moves into wider production.

Macan

The Macan brought Porsche’s SUV formula into a smaller package and became another high-volume pillar of the range. Combustion-engine production continued in many markets into 2026.
